The Illusion of Growth:
Viral Spikes and Phantom Traffic

Several dealerships within the dataset experienced dramatic traffic spikes tied to promotional events, social campaigns, or short-term paid media surges. In isolation, these spikes appear positive. In context, they often represent volatility rather than durable growth.

Event-Driven Traffic Behavior

  • Median pages per visit during spike periods: 1.05
  • Median session duration: under 30 seconds

Insight:

High-volume traffic without corresponding engagement indicates attention without capture. These moments generate noise rather than demand.

Phantom Traffic and Data Corruption

Bot and non-human traffic were identified in a significant portion of the sample. In several cases, more than 25 percent of visits originated from regions with no plausible commercial relevance.

The “Click Farm” Effect: Programmatic display campaigns running on low-quality networks were found to be driving traffic with 100% bounce rates and 0.0-second session durations.

Insight:

Phantom traffic inflates performance reporting while degrading retargeting efficiency. Many dealers are unknowingly optimizing campaigns against corrupted datasets.
